I underwent extensive training in Spine Surgery under the foremost Spine Surgeon of the country Dr Bhojraj for a period of one year . All the finer details for the clinical decision making were taught to me. I have had extensive training in all aspect of spinal surgery. I dealt with spinal trauma, spinal infections, spinal deformity & other adult degenerative conditions of the spine. I am performing many of the spinal procedures independently. The surgical spectrum encompasses all kinds of spinal pathologies from degenerative, infections and deformities to high cervical and craniovertebral anomalies and tumors.

The Department of Orthopedics caters to more than 500 outpatients daily and has indoor bed strength of 600. This makes it the single largest department in the hospital, and the largest Orthopaedic Department in the country. Set up in 1942 as the first dedicated Department of Orthopaedic in India, the Orthopaedic services offered by KEM hospital are regarded as the best available in India. The Department of Orthopedics is involved in treating all levels of spinal surgery ranging from routine lumbar degenerative disc disease to complex cervical spine and craniovertebral anomalies. The department is also a major referral center for spinal deformity correction. Annually over 600 spinal surgical procedures are performed 

Spine Fellowship with Dr Bharat R Dave in SPINE HOSPITAL June 2006  – January 2007

I undertook a Spine Training Program with Dr Bharat R Dave ( MCh – Liverpool ) who is one of the leading Spine Surgeons Of India and was the Organizing Secretary for the ASSICON – 2007 (Annual Conference of the Association of the Spine Surgeons of India). Dr Dave operates more than 500 spine cases per year.

I have been working as an Orthopaedic resident at VSGH, which is the only municipal, and also one of the oldest hospitals in western India with over 700 beds. It provides both basic and advanced care facilities. VSGH is a level III Tertiary Care and Post Graduate Institute of international repute. It has a busy orthopedic department in which around 700 spine surgeries, 500 arthroplasties, 800 Hip surgeries, and more than 3000 trauma cases are done every year. A large number of minor procedures are also carried out. It also has a physiotherapy department which is well equipped with the latest machines for better and faster rehabilitation of the patients. It has a radiological department which has Spiral CT, MRI, Doppler, Angiography and interventional facilities. It I also has a library which has a wide collection of books for the specialty and also a vast number of journals from worldwide.

During my 3 year rotation as a resident (S.H.O.), I worked for one and a half years in Arthroscopy, Arthroplasty and Spine surgery unit and the remaining one and a half year in Trauma Surgery, Pediatric surgery, Orthopedic Oncology. During my training period I had to attend to cases in the emergency department, where I had experience in dealing with various types of orthopedic trauma including closed treatment of fractures and also operative treatment both independently and under supervision.One and a half year rotation with experience in preoperative evaluation, operative management, complications & post operative follow up of total joint arthroplasty of the hip and the knee both primary and revision. The rotation also gave me the opportunity to assist in different spinal surgeries including Decompression & Stabilization for Tuberculosis Spine, Spondylolisthesis correction, Discectomy both open and endoscopic and Post Traumatic Cervical, Thoracic, Lumber Spine Stabilization.

The work schedule for the three-year period included 2 days of out patient department and 2 days of operative sessions and also emergency calls to attend to trauma cases.  1 in 3 on call rotation, working as a part of the team responsible for managing a variety of orthopedic emergencies including various types of fractures, dislocations as well as soft tissue injury.
